By McKinley "Mac" Day

Candidate for Board Member; Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District; Unexpired Short Term

I do not want the new Common Core State Standards to reduce teachers' ability to create curriculum, instruct students or manage their classrooms.
I was selected for the NASA Teachers in Space workshop on the basis of my work with the A Train Math Ministry which included: teaching Livermore homeschoolers mathematics; six years of math tutoring to primarily middle school and high school girls in the city of Livermore; Math and Science instruction to juvenile delinquents in the Alameda county detention facility; Math and Technology instruction to social economic disadvantage students at risk of dropping out of low performing Title 1 schools.

Unfortunately, American students are not progressing fast enough in mathematics to catch up to their peers in other industrialized countries. With the impending implementation of the more rigorous Common Core State Standards in math, teachers will be required to teach math in a different manner. This will definitely create stress for math teachers, students, and parents as well.

Teachers, design and create appropriate curriculum for their classes however, there are already many companies already selling various computerized federally approved products and services to school districts, which are designed to meet the new Common Core State Standards. I'm against any product or service however, that subverts teachers' ability to design and create appropriate curriculum for their classes, and I do not want the new Common Core State Standards to reduce teachers' ability to instruct students, create curriculum, or manage their classrooms.
