Hi! My name is James Chang and I am running to be on Berkeley's Rent Stabilization Board. Housing is a very personal issue to me. As a recent UC Berkeley graduate, having been an independent college student who had to rely on financial aid and waiting tables to pay for school, I rely on affordable housing, I rely on co-op housing to help offset the ever increasing cost of education. I want to be Rent Stabilization Board Commissioner because Berkeley needs new energized leadership. We need to revitalize Berkeley's long history of progressivism on issues like increasing affordable housing and strengthening and protecting rent control. I have been involved in Berkeley as the Vice President of External Affairs for the Berkeley Student Cooperative, a Berkeley Tenants Union member, a Housing Advisory and Arts Commissioner. I plan on using my unique experiences to help ensure that Berkeley is a place where we can all call home.

Housing in Berkeley faces challenges, including affordability, safety, and sustainability. As your commissioner, I will be an energetic advocate for community-based, mix income, cooperative, and comprehensive approaches to housing, and re-energize the voters mandated Rent Board, and make sure we ensure A Rent Board for the 21st Century This website includes my biography, information on the Pro-Rent Control Slate, and, and my thoughts on some issues facing the city and housing. There are many ways to get involved, including volunteering, making a donation and/or endorsing me. If you have any questions, comment, and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me at james4berkeley@gmail.com.
