My name is Tom Fox, I am simply a citizen but now I'am candidate for the House of Representatives in California's 33rd Congressional District, independently, and not as a Democrat or a Republican.

Other than for my first eight months, I have lived in Southern California for most of my life. I was educated in the Los Angeles Unified School System. From the age of 12 until I went to college, I grew up surfing at Malibu. That lifestyle resulted in my combing surfing spots from the Ventura/Los Angeles county line down to Palos Verdes. I have witnessed the growth and transformation of the entire district.

I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Political Science. I graduated from Los Angeles' Southwestern University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate.

I have spent the last 30 years Southern California as a lawyer, representing individuals and families from all walks of life.

Politically, I am a centrist, picking what I consider the best of what both political parties offer. I was once registered as a Democrat, however, for me, I felt that their philosophy didn't facilitate the future as I envision. To me, the Republican Party does not support my values of inclusion nor does it offer forward thinking either.

I am also conflicted by the reliance on special interest money by both political parties. Time and time again legislation is passed to benefit those interests that are most often to the detriment of the rest of us. I have no interest in being your representative on those terms.

I believe in social justice and that we, as a society, have a duty to care for those who are unable to care for themselves but not for those who can. I also believe in fiscal conservatism. In government, as in life, I don't believe in spending money that you don't have unless it is absolutely necessary and only when one has a plan on how to pay back that obligation.

I also don't like government intruding into our lives and telling us what is best for us. This runs the gambit from the government making decisions on contraception and reproductive rights to the government telling it's citizens what kind, or how much food to eat. It is not the governments place to make those decisions for us.

I don't believe in a big government and I don't believe that government can solve all of our problems. I believe in a government whose role is constrained by our nation's constitution. I do believe in a strong government and I don't find that a contradiction. Our government should work with a strong business community to provide a sound economic climate for the creation of jobs and prosperity.

I am a true believer in the American dream. To me, this means having the freedom to pursue our dreams, whatever they may be, and the opportunity to achieve success and prosperity along whatever path we choose to take, provided we are willing to be innovative, persistent and work hard.

Most importantly, I want our government to return to being the government of the people, by the people and for the people.
