Spending and the National debtBy John R. EdwardsCandidate for United States Representative; District 53 | |

The President, the Senate and the Congress must do the adult thing; do their job; control spending to reduce the National debt! The job that the Congress has is to tax and spend. They have not been doing theis job for some time. For example, when faced with a 600 billion dollar bank bailout, TARP1, they delayed the bill until over 100 billion in perks could be added to the bill that was sure to pass. No rational person can claim that as an example of good government. Why should we settle for less then good and open government. Why should secrets be put in the hands of anyone who would leak them? The National debt is important because it is an ongoing devaluation of the dollar. The dollar is the world currency! As long as the world thinks there is value in the dollar, it will continue to be accepted. It should be given value in terms of the amount of oil it will buy. We don't have gold, but we do have oil. If the President would pump oil in the Gulf of Mexico, we would have even more oil. Canada has oil, but the President is forcing them to sell oil to the Chinese. That is not rational! To make the dollar seem like it is worth more, Congress has to cut spending, annually. Start with congressmen, their staff, and on down the line. The military should not be part of this reduction; they should be building force and retaining trained troops. Unemployment insurance welfare should finally reach an end. More people should be working than taking. All those people forced off unemployment welfare need jobs. It is easier to create minimum wage jobs than it is to make jobs at twelve dollars an hour or thirty dollars an hour. Naturally, states and cities may have the desire to establish their own minimum wage. Let the market determine the wage.In any case, it is very likely that the business migration out of California will continue. Eventually, working people will follow the jobs to other states. A job should return value, a product or a service, for the wage paid which is a market place action. Make an offer; see who comes to do the task. Congress must cut regulations that make it harder to do business. The tax on profits earned outside the United States is stupid. Profits earned else where and taxed there should be welcomed home. Otherwise, the money stays outside the United States. Business men are mostly savvy about paying the minimum tax. The Federal government can not create jobs. They can only take money from Peter and pay Paul. That is not making money! Money is made creating a product or providing a service. Seed money used in business must maintain its value. Devaluation as practiced for the past thirty to forty years, maybe longer, is not responsible! |
