Candidate for
Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector; County of Sonoma

David has over 35 years of leadership experience in governmental finance. He serves as the Sonoma County Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector. He was appointed to the position in 2012 after a nationwide search by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to fill the unexpired term of his retired predecessor. In addition to his official duties of elective office, he serves as a trustee of the Sonoma County Employee's Retirement Association, the program administrator of the Sonoma County Energy Independence Program, and as treasurer and auditor of Sonoma County Clean Power. Immediately preceding his appointment here, David was the Orange County Auditor-Controller having been first elected to that position in 1998 and having been re-elected to three additional terms. David first joined Orange County as its Director of Internal Audit where he helped lead the county's recovery following its 1995 bankruptcy.

Before transitioning to county service, David worked for sixteen years in higher education as the University Auditor for the California State University Board of Trustees and as the Campus Audit Manager for the University of California at Davis. He started his professional career working as a senior accountant responsible for governmental auditing in a private sector CPA firm.

David serves as one of seven members of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, a non-profit organization that establishes and improves financial accounting and reporting standards for all state and local governments. He has served as the president of the Orange County Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and of the State Association of County Auditors. He also serves as the chair of the State Controller's Advisory Committee on County Accounting Procedures. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Government Finance Officer's Association of the United States and Canada and the California Association of Treasurers and Tax Collectors.

David was born in Berkeley, CA. He graduated from Saint Mary's High School and attended Saint Mary's College. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict and was honorably discharged. He then served in the California Air National Guard while attending community college in Oakland and Santa Rosa. David completed his undergraduate work at Sonoma State University, graduating with honors and earning a baccalaureate degree in management.

While working full-time at the University of California at Davis, David went on to earn his MBA (with emphasis in Finance and Accounting).

David is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Information Systems Auditor, and a Certified Internal Auditor.

David lives in Forestville, CA with Cristina, his wife of 26 years, and their two sons, Eric and Jason.
