STOP WASTING RESOURCES ON LOW LEVEL MARIJUANA CASESBy Victoria I. ShanahanCandidate for District Attorney; County of Sonoma | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I will provide clear direction, standards and policies so that we stop wasting valuable resources in prosecuting low level marijuana cases. I will track and release statistics so that the public knows what we are prosecuting. The District Attorney's Office currently has no clear policy or direction on what types of marijuana cases we should prosecute. As a result, we are prosecuting patients, trimmers and drug traffickers all the same. This has resulted in every one of our felony trial departments having a steady caseload of marijuana related cases. More time and resources are spent on prosecuting marijuana cases than is spent on cases of violent crime associated with them. This is a waste of valuable resources. In my first 100 days in office, I will implement a clear marijuana policy that provides clear direction to law enforcement and to our prosecutors on what and when we file these kinds of cases. I will honor the Sonoma County guidelines on how much marijuana patients and caregivers are allowed to possess and/or cultivate. If people are acting within those guidelines, a criminal charge will not be filed. It's quite simple. It is time that we are smart on crime and how we use our resources. Please see my website for more specific information on a marijuana policy. |
