SAFE, SUSTAINABLE, AND PROSPEROUS CITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Equal City Services
Bruce knows Mayor Faulconer and City Hall and will ensure that District 4 receives equal funding for reparations of its streets and sidewalks. These are basic services that our city cannot ignore and must address.
Safe Parks
Bruce will work to ensure our parks are safe, maintained, and graffiti-free. He will work to ensure equal funding is provided to District 4 so that our community remains beautiful.
Creating a Sustainable and Effective Police Force
Our police force is vulnerable to its current conditions. Our officers are well-trained and effective but then leave for better working conditions. The current system is wasteful where the taxpayers are essentially investing resources to train these officers but then we cannot compete with other cities that recruit them with larger salaries and better schedules. We need to build a sustainable and effective police force. Bruce will advocate for improved conditions for our police officers. Bruce will bring together with the SDPD, city staff, the Independent Budget Analyst's staff and non-profits to do an assessment of cities with the highest retention rates and analyze their best practices.
Increasing People of Color Joining the Police Force
People of color represent over 40 percent of the city's population and Bruce will advocate for more people of color to serve in the police force. This helps ensure our police force is reflective of today's demographics and cultures.
Building Relationships with Youth and Police Officers
Safety is not successful in a silo but with everyone coming together to advance our shared vision. As such, Bruce plans on building a program aimed at strengthening relationships between our youth and the police. This will help build trust and stronger direct lines of communication that helps to deter crime and increase the safety of our neighborhoods. As part of this, Bruce propose setting up mini apprenticeships and internships for youth to work directly with the police department and the Black Police Officers Association.
Safe Schools
Parents need to know their children are safe at school; teachers and principals need to feel that their workplace is safe; and, students need to feel safe in order to focus on learning. Bruce will work with non-profits, PTA, teachers union, school police officers, non- profits, SDPD, school and local leaders to convene a series of meetings to identify safety vulnerabilities at our schools and develop recommendations to adopt to increase security and safety at schools.
