Press Enterprise Editorial - They did not Endorse YoungBy Michael Martinez ScottCandidate for County Superintendent of Schools; County of Riverside | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
A 250 word essay for Michael Martinez Scott on the Editorial Page of the Press-Enterprise because they choose not to endorse incumbent Young.I am a father to eight children, grandson of Mexican immigrants, and married 35 years. I've served the Inland Empire as teacher for 25 years (grades 1-8, principal, and adjunct professor at National, Biola, and CBU). Through teaching, I saw the need to connect with students in an innovative way and developed score enhancing "One-to-One ClassroomsŪ," training schools in Texas, California, and China. I've seen many struggling students realize their potential and teach their peers within the classroom! For our children to succeed, it's imperative a superintendent know the classroom personally. While I've taught for 25 years, incumbent Young has never taught a year in public school or been a principal. Compensating for this, Young said, "I'm applying business principles to... education. (Overseeing budgets) is... the biggest responsibility of the county office." HOW IS business? At Young's 2007 appointment, ZERO percent of Riverside districts were listed as "May not meet its financial obligations" (CDE 2nd Interim Reports). Riverside County Districts Financially At-Risk Now: 2010 - 43% 2011 + 43% 2012 + 78% 2013 + 39% I PROMISE TO REVERSE THIS DISASTROUS SLIDE! My Goals:
