Should Torrance Have Districts?By Norm "Opa" SegelCandidate for Councilmember; City of Torrance | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The City Council in Torrance is made up of The Mayor and six Councilmembers. These Councilmembers are elected "at large" from within the entire City. This means that all of the Council seats could be from one part of Torrance or even theoretically from one street. This method of Council election could lead to an unequal or complete lack of representation for some of our residents. The City of Redondo Beach is divided into Districts. Each district elects one of its residents to sit on its City Council. This may be a fairer method of electing a City Council. Admittedly, I am not aware of the history behind our method vs. Redondo Beach. This may have been a hot button issue in the past. Regardless of the history, I think that this issue should be reexamined. The only negative would be the cost to institute a new method. This cost though might be minor when compared to the benefit to our residents. Norm "Opa" Segel |
