Barbara Halliday's top three prioritiesBy Barbara HallidayCandidate for Mayor; City of Hayward | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Below is a more detailed summary of the top three priorities noted earlier.1. I will work with our neighborhoods and business communities to make the city safer, cleaner and more attractive and to address concerns about quality of life. I will strengthen programs such as Keep Hayward Clean and Green (KHCG), SMASH, Access Hayward, Crime Mapping and Nixel. I will expand the Neighborhood Partnership Program to address disaster preparedness and make sure all areas of the city have plans and volunteers in place in case disaster strikes. I will also work with the school district (HUSD), recreation district (HARD) and other groups to make sure Hayward provides a safe, healthy and enriching environment for our children and youth to grow and thrive. 2. I will make sure Hayward continues to be well managed, fiscally solvent, and progressing toward long-term fiscal stability. I will work hard to resolve the current labor dispute and reach fair and fiscally sustainable agreements with our employees, and I will make sure we provide the best possible services in the most customer-friendly, efficient and cost-effective manner as possible. I will also work hard to implement our economic development plan and bring new businesses to boost revenues and provide food, shopping and entertainment options to our residents and work force. 3. I will strive to meet the goals established in our Climate Action Program, including reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, conserving water, reducing waste and encouraging recycling, protecting open space, and planning for the expected rise in sea level. I will promote "complete" streets and neighborhoods that allow people to walk to convenient neighborhood-serving businesses and easily access public transportation. I will encourage more solar installations such as the ones the city has placed at the wastewater treatment plant and other city facilities, take steps to implement use of "gray water" for landscaping and gardens, and hold development at the urban limit line I helped to establish in the early 1990's as a member of the Growth Management Task Force. |
