No elected official should remain in office for more than 12 years. I propose extended terms with limits on the number of terms an official can hold office.
Term limits are an effective way to prevent career politicians and encourage civic minded individuals to run for elected positions with energy and fresh perspectives. I believe each term should be 4 years for legislators and 6 years for senators with neither remaining in office for more than 12 years. The elections should be staggered so that the number of your experienced leaders will not diminish. I propose extending the amount of time in each term because as it is now, with terms being only 2 years, legislators spend their first year trying to propose legislation and the second year trying to get re-elected. Elected officials cannot get their agendas accomplished in one year. Let your representatives concentrate on getting important legislation passed for most of their term and use the last of the term preparing for re-election. After 12 years, let them move on so that they don't stagnate in unproductivity or take their positions for granted. There should be no pensions for elected officials and per diems should be reported regarding their use and monitored for appropriateness.
