Smart Voter Full Biography for David Denny

Candidate for
Member of Board of Education; Northwest Local School District

This information is provided by the candidate

My name is David Denny and I am running for reelection to the Northwest Local School Board. A resident for nearly my entire life in the NWLSD, I have been a student, athlete, band member, parent of three students, booster member, committee member, PTA member, band parent, athlete parent, volunteer coach, paid coach, and a member, and current President, of the Northwest Board of Education. With that said, I am confident that our schools are sound academically (including extra-curriculars), administratively, and financially. We do a great job providing for the students of our community while keeping our expenses low for the tax payer.

A few financial facts:

  • We have cut $9MM from our budget since 2009 while only losing 300 students
  • Our teachers and administrators have been on a three year salary freeze
  • We are self-insured for Worker's Comp saving $350K in 2012
  • We initiated and participate in an insurance consortium (SWOOSH) with other districts saving us thousands of dollars
  • Saved $1.7MM in energy savings from HB264; also received $4MM in QZAB funding for the energy efficient projects
  • Additionally, received $400K from Greater Cincinnati Energy Alliance for HB 264 projects
  • Negotiated a settlement with Northgate Mall that resulted in a one-time payment of $250K
  • We have contracted with UC Health & NovaCare which nets us $700,000 over 10 years
  • We have two emergency levies in effect + one is up for re-newel in 2015, the other in 2017; short on getting additional money from the state (not likely to happen) it will be imperative to renew those levies or we will face the issues we faced last fall + cutting extra-curriculars and potentially AP classes

Academically we provide a wide range of opportunities for students from all walks of life and interests. Last year (judging from the previous report card) we had 8 Excellent Schools, 1 With Distinction, and the District was Excellent. We had 19 Summa Cum Laudes, won millions of dollars in scholarships, and have great vocational opportunities through Butler Tech. Our Blended Learning project, while still in its infancy, is paying dividends both academically and financially. The State has changed the grading system and we will adjust (as will everybody) to better understand this new process. I am confident in our teachers and our administrators to continue their great work.

Overall, we are in the best place we have been since my term began nearly four years ago - thanks to our tax payers, our parents, students, teachers, and administrators because it is certainly a community collaborative. That is not to say we don't have our challenges, but we have strong leadership and a good community to overcome those challenges together. Thank you so much for letting me be part of this fine work and I am asking that you allow me to continue by voting for me on November 5th.
