G. Rick Marshall is running for El Camino College Board because he wants students to succeed and access the American dream. It is important that they believe in America, that ours and their best days are all ahead of us.

Students must understand American exceptional-ism; the idea that of all nations in the history of mankind, in a little over 200 years, the United States of America is the only one who has attained the standard of living for its citizens that doesn't require them to spend all their time working to get food. This is due to the political and economic liberty that our Founders gave us and is why we are the world's economic power house.

For 400 years, every generation of Americans has given to their kids and grandkids, greater opportunity, greater prosperity, a brighter future. If we keep going down road of less freedom and more government control, we will become the first generation of Americans that fails to do that. G. Rick Marshall believes in his heart, mind and soul that is completely and utterly unacceptable.

As President Ronald Reagan famously observed, "Freedom is not passed down in the blood stream from one generation to the next. Every generation has to rise up and defend it. Or one day we will find ourselves answering this question from our children and our children's children, `What was it like when America was free?'"

Students must be taught freedom and our founding principles. They must be inspired and shown that there is no goal that cannot be attained with the right skills and enough hard work. These ideas are not new but they are seldom taught. G. Rick Marshall wants to be that evangelist for them on the El Camino campus.
