A [brief] biography of my experiences that have influenced my passion for education. I encourage you to share your own experience by emailing me personally at bryan.coreas@gmail.com
Bryan Coreas is a native of La Puente, California. The son of immigrant parents and the oldest of two, Bryan started school at Erwin Elementary and eventually attended Bassett High School. In 9th grade, Bryan was selected for the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS), a yearlong academic enrichment program for high school students. Through this experience, he came to better understand the educational disparities that affect not only his family, but also his community.

Bryan's hard work and dedication paid off when upon graduation as valedictorian he was named a Montview League Outstanding Senior Honor Student and received scholarships from the City of La Puente and the Kiwanis Club. With much already achieved, but eager to further educate himself, Bryan gained acceptance into Pomona College.

As he embarked on a new journey, Bryan always remembered the many teachers and friends who helped him get to where he was. He decided to join the Draper Center for Community Partnerships, whose vision of collaboration and community engagement matched his own. There, Bryan coordinated Pomona Partners, a program aimed at connecting with 7th and 8th graders to the prospect of college, the arts and current events. He mentored for the Upward Bound Program, serving as a role model and reminder for all students of the doors that college opens. Bryan instilled a sense of community, pride and teamwork when he mentored for the Mathematics Department and for the Claremont Colleges GED program. Always looking for new challenges, Bryan played the role of both mentor and actor as a part of Theatre for Young Audiences. There, he was instrumental in creating a comfortable learning environment where first-time middle school actors would perform an adaptation of Shakespeare's As You Like It.

Bryan became a resource for the PAYS program and its students. As a Teaching Assistant, he would plan curriculum and empowered students to advocate for educational equity in their communities. His role as a college advisor allowed him to personalize the application process to meet the needs of students and their families. Bryan reassured them that their dedication to academia and extracurricular activities had made the young scholars outstanding candidates for admission into the most prestigious universities in the nation.

Bryan's unwavering commitment, leadership, reliability in the most strenuous of times, and presence in the community awarded him the Community Cornerstone Award. He was featured in the Pomona College Magazine as one of the College's Daring Minds, a student who dared to have a larger impact for the benefit of those around him.

After graduating with a B.A. in Mathematics from Pomona College, Bryan was selected as the inaugural Post-Baccalaureate Fellow for Education Outreach at the Draper Center. As full-time Draper Center staff member, he instructed and advised seventeen student coordinators as they ran their own community engagement programs. Bryan's enthusiasm made him ideal to lead college workshops for numerous K-12 schools and college access programs in the area.

Bryan is proud to have come full circle. He presided over fundamental PAYS components and their mentors: a group of fifty college advisors and mentees taking on the college admissions process, tracking and communicating with the ninety student participants on their academic progress, and organizing academic mentoring sessions for students. In addition, Bryan oversaw the interview, selection and training of eighteen summer staff members on the education pipeline, as well as the forces that drive the need for college access programs like PAYS. As part of the PAYS Advisory Committee, Bryan's duties extended the relationship of Pomona College with the community as he recruited and reviewed over 180 applications.

Bryan's interconnected approach to education, encompassing the wisdom from a wide range of roles, makes him the ideal HLPUSD Governing Board Member. His facilitation skills help to build relationships with the community by empowering its members to engage in dialogue that promotes educational achievement. He dedicates himself to involve parents as decision makers in the education of their families, working alongside teachers and their needs as they support students.

Bryan advocates for a respectful and safe working environment for all staff and administration by enhancing the lines of communication at all levels. He gives a sense of trust for our community's fears, a listening ear for their challenges, and a momentous applause for their accomplishments.

Bryan is bilingual, an excellent communicator, and someone who brings fresh and new ideas to our district + qualities that enable him to work with all members of the HLPUSD.
