Paul Brown lives in the Laguna Lake section of town and enjoys an active San Luis Obispo lifestyle. He currently is a police officer for the City of Guadalupe and has had the opportunity to involve himself in a wide variety of life experiences.

Paul moved to San Luis Obispo from his hometown of Santa Ynez, CA over 26 years ago. He came to San Luis Obispo to get a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Education from Cal Poly. He is proud to be a graduate of our local university and while he attended was involved in the following activities and organizations:

  • Week of Welcome: Board of Director / Counselor
  • Student/Community Laison Committee: Member
  • Student Affairs Committee: Student Representative
  • Alpha Phi Omega (Community Service Society): Founder
  • Alpha Gamma Rho (Agriculture Society): Member
  • Order of Omega (Honor Society): Member
  • Inter-Fraternal Council: Vice-President
  • Cal Poly Rugby Football Club: Player

The city of San Luis Obispo had a huge impact on Paul as an undergraduate. He initially moved to the Bay Area after Cal Poly and worked as an Operation Manager for MACY*S. Eager to return to SLO, at the age of 25, he started his own business (Mother's Tavern) in order to live here again. Mother's Tavern is a downtown landmark and was a great opportunity for Paul to learn how to lead and motivate an employee force of sixty plus employees. It also was a chance for him to balance out the needs of his employees, customers, and the profitability of the business. In the fifteen years Brown owned and operated it (sold in January, 2009), Mother's Tavern interacted as an essential partner in our community. This partnership is exemplified in the many awards and accolades it recieved during that time:

  • 1998 State of California Governors Award - Small Business
  • Downtown Association Beautification Award - 5 times awarded
  • Obispo Beautiful Association Award - 2 times awarded
  • New Times Readers Poll - voted best 12 years in a row

In 1999, Paul took a leave of absence from Mother's Tavern to take on a responsibility with a much higher calling than the restaurant. He joined the California Army National Guard in order to work full-time as a military instructor for at-risk youth programs at Camp San Luis Obispo. Working as a military instructor at the Grizzly Youth Academy was the best job he ever had. Paul enjoyed the opportunity to influence and mentor the lives of hundreds of at-risk youth by sharing with them life skills they needed to become more productive additions to their communities. As the Platoon Sergeant in charge of the female cadets, Paul Brown had the unique chance to motivate these young women to believe in themselves and realize their full potential as independent, empowered females.

In addition to serving the community and state, Brown was activated for federal duty and deployed shortly after the attacks on September 11. He experienced the hardship of the loss of life of those he served with. As a result, Paul understands how important it is for our community to stand behind the families of those who serve.

While in the service of our country Paul was recognized for the following:

  • 649th Military Police Company: Operations Sergeant
  • Grizzly Youth Academy: Platoon Sergeant
  • Angel Gate Academy: Squad Leader
  • Oakland Military Institute: Squad Leader
  • Operation Noble Eagle: Team Leader
  • Medals: Army Achievement(2x), Overseas Reserve Component, National Defense, Army Service, Non-Commisioned Officer Development
