Government at all levels needs to control its scope and reach.
In the two decades I have served as a Council person, I have experienced the expanding role of this local government. Much of our expanded reach is created by unfunded mandates at the County, State and Federal level. However, we can resist this expanding invasion into our private lives as local leaders. Much of the expansion is unnecessary and costly to both our freedoms and resources. Our Borough can operate the limited scope of our government with our current resources if we plan and determine to remain involved only in the most necessary roles. Most local governments have granted control to outside consultants (attorneys and engineers) who neither live in the municipality nor have been elected. The consultants are compensated hourly and therefore have a conflict of interest to resolve issues quickly. We need to keep our governance simple enough that our own local officials can govern without handing our welfare over to consultants. If I am re-elected, I will continue this limited government agenda.
