1. How would you promote good nutrition in your schools?
|
Answer from April W. (Woodring) Trego:
I believe it is essential that our schools are a place where promoting healthy eating and good nutrition is a vital and important part of our students daily lives. Promoting good nutrition, I believe, starts with educating not only our students but our teachers, administrators and community. Establishing a nutrition committee to assess our school's nutrition needs and developing a plan for addressing those needs would be essential in the eduction process. Involving families in the policy development and program planning would ensure that these healthy lifestyles can be attainable not only in our schools but at home. Providing healthy meals, which should include breakfast options, should be well balanced with limited sugar and processed food. I believe while promoting healthy eating, we should promote healthy living and one way we could do this is through our school nurses and teachers providing fun and easy learning tools our students and families can do together. Our schools can promote good nutrition by holding nutrition fairs, family nights and activities during the school day that allow learning the fundamental skills of a healthy life. As a school director, I would also personally make sure we as a school were being adequately funded through our local and state legislation, allowing us to provide the nutritional meals that are needed.
Answer from Jamie Ramage:
Students should learn:
- Food Groups
- Healthy Choices vs. Non-Healthy Choices
- Active Lifestyle
Good nutrition starts at home and should be reinforced at school.
