1. How would you promote good nutrition in your schools?
|
Answer from Peter J. Connors:
The key word here is promote. The school district has the opportunity to inform students and parents about the effects of their food choices on personal health. This should be done through email and take-home notices. The school can choose not to offer foods that they believe are harmful. However, we must respect the right of parents to be the ultimate decision makers when it comes to their children.
Keep in mind that in the '70s the American Heart Association was calling for a diet very low in fat and high in carbohydrates. Forty years later we realize that high carb diets can be a major cause of Type 2 Diabetes and that a balanced approach of fats, protein and carbs is the recommended diet.
We should be careful about what we promote.
