Protecting Pittsburgh Against Illegal Guns and ViolenceBy Jake WheatleyCandidate for Mayor; City of Pittsburgh; Democratic Party | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
As a Marine, before Jake was issued his M16 and sent off war as a part of Operation Desert Storm, he had to pass a background check. We should certainly demand this same for when a civilian wants to legally own a firearm. Even before a Wheatley administration would serve the City of Pittsburgh, Jake has already signed on to support the Mayors Against Illegal Guns mission that the "highest responsibility is to enforce the law and protect the people" they serve. In doing so, Jake supports the principles set forth by over 900 mayors, both Democrat and Republican, that:
Punish + to the maximum extent of the law + criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.
Target and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break the law by knowingly selling guns to straw purchasers.
Oppose all federal efforts to restrict cities' right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to combat illegal gun trafficking.
Keep lethal, military-style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines off our streets.
Work to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and tracing of illegal guns.
Support all local state and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.
Invite other cities to join us in this new national effort. A Wheatley administration will also be active in reaching out and educating all citizens, in every neighborhood in the areas of safe gun ownership and protection, anti-bullying efforts and conflict resolution without the need for violence.
Set as a goal the elimination of violence and we would measure of effectiveness towards that goal each and every year.
Begin within our schools and initiate a campaign to unlearn violence of all kind.
Attack the root causes of violence be it economic, mental illness, drugs and alcohol, and debunking the false social precepts associated to the glorification of violence.
Monitor and report annually to the public the results of crime reduction |
