Growing up in Boyle Heights, I knew my family didn't have a lot of money, but that never mattered. From an early age, I understood that Los Angeles was a city of opportunities for anyone who had a dream of living a better life and providing a better life for their children.

I have always been proud of my hometown, always conscious of how lucky I was to grow up here and how fortunate I have been to represent portions of Los Angeles in the State Assembly and State Senate.

Today, I am running for the Los Angeles City Council because we need bold and experienced leadership to strengthen and protect the Los Angeles Dream.

I am proud of my record as one of California's most effective progressive advocates. I have authored nearly 100 bills that were signed and chaptered into California law by four different Governors. Most notable was legislation that created jobs in downtown LA, expanded access to healthcare, cleaned up brownfields, defended the right to organize in the workplace and protected the rights of immigrants.
