Trutanich has been a leader in fighting for environmental justice and recognized repeatedly for his expertise in this area of the law.Trutanich was one of the first attorneys to be assigned to the newly-formed environmental unit of the LA County District Attorney's office, helped write the protocols for prosecuting environmental crimes and won one of the first felony convictions in an environmental case. As a private attorney Trutanich specialized in environmental litigation and received the highest ratings for his expertise in this area of the law. When Trutanich became City Attorney, he brought this history and these sensibilities to his elected office. He appointed William Carter as his chief of staff; Carter was a former U.S. attorney and headed the DA's environmental division. In addition, under Trutanich's leadership the City Attorney's office has won multi-million dollar lawsuits against CVS, Target and Walgreen's for violating pollution and health laws; he also successfully filed the first illegal oil spill lawsuit in the city's history. |
