Bring Jobs Back to LABy Frederick SuttonCandidate for Council Member; City of Los Angeles; District 11 | |

I support the reduction in the "Gross Receipts Tax" as laid out by The Business Tax Advisory Committee"Los Angeles should be an economic leader in the country. We have the nation's largest port, one of the busiest airports, several renowned universities, a skilled workforce, the nation's largest municipally owned utility and great year-round weather. Companies and small business should be flocking to our city. Despite these attributes Los Angeles has an unemployment rate of over 10%, well above the national average. While Los Angeles County has gained jobs, the City of Los Angeles has seen a decline of over 9%. We can start by electing economic cheerleaders to office whose priorities should be to create a friendly business environment. Although the reduction of the Los Angeles Business Tax is not a new topic, it is time to adhere to the Business Tax Advisory Committee's recommendation of a slow and careful phase out of the tax. It will help make LA more competitive, encourage job creation and demonstrate Los Angeles is serious about competing for business. A careful phase out coupled with efficiency and waste cutting measures will ensure the tax is repealed in a responsible manner. Below is a link to the plan http://finance.lacity.org/form/BTAC%20Final%20Report%20on%20Phasing%20Out%20Gross%20Receipts%20Tax-2.pdf We should also encourage Los Angeles to become the city of entrepreneurship by promoting Business Incubators. We need to help people turn their ideas into reality. Los Angeles can help foster startups through public private partnerships. |
