Reform the legislature and cut its bloated budgetWe have the nation's largest, full-time legislature; it operates with approximately 2,900 staff and a budget of nearly $273 million. Yet it can't manage to properly fund our schools, protect the environment, or repair thousands of structurally-deficient bridges and roads. It even failed the basic task of redrawing district lines following the 2010 Census. We should fund state government based on two priorities: performance and our shared priorities. Our legislature performs terribly, and I've never met a voter who prizes a giant, unaccountable incumbent protection machine. In response, I'll introduce legislation to reduce the budget of the General Assembly by 25 percent (saving the state more than $68 million annually) and join with reform-minded legislators of both parties to drain the legislature's corrupt slush funds. To lead by example, I'll reject per diems and all travel reimbursements. |
