Infrastructure and JobsBy Marcy DubroffCandidate for State Representative; Pennsylvania State House of Representatives; District 41 | |

Pennsylvania has hundreds of roads, bridges, tunnels and dams that need both repairs and updating. According to Philly.com, this crisis stems from years of deferred maintenance, as well as the collapse of a 2007 highway and transit funding plan that called for tolling Interstate 80. The bill never passed. As a result, road and bridgework has been deferred and critical transit projects are on indefinite hold. While our infrastructure screams out for attention, there are also Pennsylvanians that are crying out for decent-paying jobs. If I am elected, I will push for these jobs, specifically those that can improve the safety of our highways and byways, and will ultimately put Pennsylvanians back to work. Another key to economic recovery is encouraging small businesses in our community to grow and add workers. It's clear that the people of Pennsylvania cannot rely on big business to address the jobs deficit that affects so many of us. However, small businesses have the power to effect a massive change in the current economic environment. Some estimates show that more than 70% of new jobs are created by small businesses. If small businesses would, on the average, be able to hire just one more employee, the entire economy would see a boost. As a legislator, I would work to make the economic climate more favorable to small, local businesses, by increasing their access to grants and loans and pushing for an effort to promote PA businesses as the responsible choice for consumers. The legislature needs to do more to educate and engage individual communities to increase support for local, sustainable businesses. This will ultimately result in stronger area economies. |
