Protecting Our ChildrenBy Lakshmi SammarcoCandidate for Coroner; County of Hamilton | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Deaths related to child abuse and drug use in children/teens are tragic. We all need to act to save our children.Faced with the investigation of deaths of many Cincinnati children, Dr. Sammarco has joined local community leaders to develop drug prevention programs for Hamilton County's youth. Dr. Sammarco is personally involved in presenting these programs in Cincinnati and Hamilton County Schools. Said Sammarco "By far the biggest surprise has been the number of children who are brought to the coroner's office. As a mother, it is a horror to see a small child who has died from child abuse, or a teenager whose life is ended early because of drugs. After a few weeks as Coroner, I decided I had to try to make a difference. Even during my short tenure, I have identified patterns in preventable deaths that need public attention... drug related deaths, intoxicated driving, child abuse, youth violence... these are common themes and I am adding my support to the groups that battle these problems." Drug Abuse Prevention Drug abuse amongst children and youth is not confined to any social or economic status. Many children in our community die every year either directly or indirectly from drug abuse. Commonly drunk or intoxicated driving is at the heart of many of these deaths. Sadly, overdose from strong street drugs such as heroin and methamphetamine is on the rise as well statewide. Experts Agree "Prevention Is the Key" "Drug addiction is a preventable disease. Results from NIDA-funded research have shown that prevention programs involving families, schools, communities, and the media are effective in reducing drug abuse. Although many events and cultural factors affect drug abuse trends, when youths perceive drug abuse as harmful, they reduce their drug taking. Thus, education and outreach are key in helping youth and the general public understand the risks of drug abuse. Teachers, parents, medical and public health professionals must keep sending the message that drug addiction can be prevented if one never abuses drugs."
