Budget

By Charmion S. (Morse) Donegan

Candidate for Board Member; Cabrillo Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The budget crisis, not only in Cabrillo, but nation-wide is a great concern of mine. We are expected to do more with less and it looks like that's the way it will be for a much longer time than anyone imagined.
When it comes to educating our children money should not be an issue. However, it is and always will be. Therefore it is up to administrators and governing boards to be prudent in their spending. Cabrillo in the last several years has passed two bonds and one parcel tax. That is quite a financial burden on property owners. The public is trusting the district to spend that money wisely and the governing board should be keenly aware of where every penny goes.

In spite of the bleak financial picture, the district is able to continue to deliver to students an excellent curriculum and to provide students with enrichment programs such as sports, technology and the arts with the help of parents, community, and the Education Foundation.

A governing board should set general policy, manage the budget, and then let the professional educators and staff do their job. Education is changing and Cabrillo under the leadership of a new superintendent, is striving to provide students with programs to prepare them to compete in the job market, or be qualified to attend any college of their choice when they graduate from high school.
