Greetings, Paso school board candidates. I'm Tribune reporter Pat Pemberton, and I've been assigned to write about this year's candidates for Paso school board. I will be contacting each of you individually, but since there are seven of you, I thought I might streamline the process a bit by getting an email head start.
So, if you could, please reply with the following info about yourself and your candidacy.
The answers do not have to be long, but please do send them soon.
Thank you.

I will bring a unique and balanced perspective that combines 25 years of executive experience and business acumen with my passion and respect for education. I have considerable experience owning or working for or with various businesses and not for profit enterprises to overcome similar financial challenges now facing the District. The process is not for the faint of heart. I will ask tough questions and demand the best answers. I am familiar with building consensus and in collaborating with others to accomplish the task at hand. I will thoroughly enjoy the complex task of restoration, especially if in the process we succeed in making Paso Robles Schools the best in the county.
2.) Volunteer work or any other work related to schools and education
I have been an active and engaged parent of children attending Paso Robles Schools since 1988. I began my service in 1991 by serving on School Site Council for Pat Butler Elementary. I have volunteered/supported various on campus activities including among others AVID Mentor, Athletics, the Arts, Leadership, PTA/PTSA, Tiger/Cub Scout Den Leader, overnight Field Trip volunteer/driver, and Chess Club Coordinator. As a Lifetime Heritage Foundation member, I was the conceptual/inaugural sponsor of the California Midstate Fair Industrial Arts Auction. I have taught Elementary, Middle and High School Religious Education. Today, I serve as Chairperson of the School Site Council for Flamson Middle School. I am a participating member of the District Parent Council as well as the PRJUSD Budget Advisory Committee.
3.) Your own educational background
I attended Queen of Angels Seminary but came to the conclusion I did not have a vocation to the priesthood. Upon graduation, I enrolled at Cal Poly, Pomona later transferring to Mount San Antonio Junior College due to work and family concerns. I have continued a lifetime of continuing education that includes receiving and teaching both technical and professional training.
4.) How long you've lived in Paso
We have lived in Paso Robles for twenty-five years. I arrived from Southern California in July, 1987. Julie and our children followed in December.
5.) Names and ages of children and if they attended Paso schools
Julie and I have been blessed with five children, Melissa, Lauren, John, Chrissie and Jacob. All have attended Paso Schools. Four have graduated from Paso High, one as Valedictorian and two set pole vaulting records. My goal is help ensure that other students continue to benefit from the rigorous academic, athletic, social, and philosophical preparation that our schools have given to our children, a well-rounded preparation that enabled them to successfully graduate with multiple Bachelor's, Master's and soon to be PhD degrees from some of the very finest universities in the country. We also have an 8th Grader participating in both the Dual Immersion and GATE programs at Flamson Middle School.
6.) Your top three priorities if elected/re-elected
1. Avoid State takeover. Survive to stabilize then improve our school's financial situation
2. Increase Student Achievement, Career & College Readiness and Average Daily Attendance
3. Improve Communication, Accountability and Transparency
(Engaged Students + Active Parents) + (Gifted Teachers x Dedicated Staff) = Informed Citizens
