Why do I run for re-election?

By Van-Ha To-Cowell

Candidate for Board Member; Lincoln Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
In 2008, when I was campaigning to be elected to the Lincoln USD Board of Trustees, I walked to every single house in the District. I listened to the community and saw some clear needs. One of the needs was equitable access to curriculum. In the past 4 years, I have worked hard to make this need become possible for all students. We now provide leadership opportunities in all schools. We invested in time and effort to study data to identify more qualified students to be encouraged to take advanced courses. Many of all schools have an API of 800 and above. As we continue to work on closing the achievement gap, the gap has decreased and our test scores continue to rise. With the help of a strong group of parents, Lincoln Latin Leadership, we partnered with UOP in the summer to provide 9th-12th grade students a college experience. Even through tough economic times, we were able to maintain a healthy budget; which consequently allowed us to preserve the arts, athletics, and music programs. Our vocational education programs are striving. The Construction Engineering Academy won the prestigious California School Boards Association's (CSBA)Golden Bell Award in 2010, and in 2011 Lincoln Latin Leadership was awarded the same distinguished award for Community Outreach and Involvement.
I am proud of the accomplishments and progress we have made as the whole District. I have brought in a beneficial perspective to the Board as a K-12 educator and have made a difference. I would be very honored to continue my service for another term. I respectfully ask for your vote on November 6th.
