As a young boy helping to run my family's neighborhood grocery story, I learned the value of hard work early on. It has been my privilege to spend the past 35 years working hard and getting results for San Francisco's children and families. As your Supervisor, I will make sure that City Hall works hard for District 7.Twenty-five years ago my wife Cathy and I moved to District 7 community of Westwood Park to raise our two daughters and put them through public school. For the past three decades, I have established a track record of getting results for San Francisco's working class families, first as Executive Director of a successful non-profit and now as the current two-term President of the San Francisco Board of Education. Under my leadership at the San Francisco Unified School District, student achievement has risen across the board, truancy is on the decline and there is a new spirit of collaboration between the Board and Superintendent. As a result, San Francisco was once again rated the top urban school district in the entire State of California. While student performance was making gains I led an effort to make improvements to the district's budget - setting it down a more fiscally responsible path. I am running for Supervisor because I want to grow San Francisco's economy, promote healthy neighborhoods and return fiscal responsibility to City Hall. I know what it takes to promote small businesses and create jobs--and I've had decades of experience doing both. I grew up working in my parents' San Francisco grocery store, learning the fundamentals of running a small business. Later, I founded and ran a successful non-profit, turning a start-up into a 10 million dollar-a-year enterprise. As the President of the School Board, I have worked to ensure that our students are prepared for the high-tech, high-wage jobs of the future. As a proven leader, I have made some difficult budget and policy decisions which have prepared me to join the Board of Supervisors. District 7 residents want a strong and independent voice at City Hall. I am beholden only to District 7 residents not special interests - and will continue to make decisions based on what is right for San Francisco and my constituents. I would be honored to be your first choice for District 7 Supervisor. |
