My 12 years on the Carlsbad School Board have been marked by an unwavering commitment to student learning, fiscal prudence, and strong leadership.

Continue to build on our already strong academic and extracurricular programs.

  • During my years on the School Board our District's Academic Performance Index (API) has increased almost 100 points. This is significant not only because it means our students are making significant academic gains, but it helps our keep our property values up.
  • More students are taking and passing Honors and AP classes
  • Our graduation rate is among the highest in the state and 90% of our graduates intend to go to college
  • Our students are excelling in music, drama, broadcasting, speech & debate, dance, and athletic programs...often receiving regional and even national recognition

Make the best use of resources.
  • As I fiscal conservative, I supported putting money in reserves during better financial times, which helped us weather the first three years of declining revenue from the state.
  • My attention to details and willingness to ask tough questions have saved the district considerable resources during construction and contract negotiations.
  • We've built four schools, totally remodeled Carlsbad High School, and renovated/modernized every other school all within budget.

Strong leadership.
  • I led the District in the development of its Vision and the Continuous Improvement Cycle that is used to set annual goals and report results.
  • I work with fellow Board members to set direction in a clear way so our staff members don't waste time acting on conflicting messages.
  • I visit classrooms at least bi-weekly, attend athletic events, concerts, and special events to make sure I stay connected to parents, teachers, and students.
