Our nation's political founding has two major undertakings most students hear about in school: the War of the Revolution (1775-1783) and the creation of a new Constitution (1787-1791).

While most of our founders and freedom fighters were born "here," in the 13 Colonies of Great Britain, their ancestors came from other places. In the War of 1812, which some call part 2 of the Revolutionary War, we see intense political arguments between those founders.

We should not be discouraged then, when political people who care about life and liberty argue and disagree now. Our nation does best when we all get involved in discussing before voting for people and propositions, I believe.

Thomas Jefferson put his faith in the notion that citizens would engage each other in discussion and then choose wisely...at the national, state and local levels.

But at the end of the process of choosing, after each election cycle, I hope we can all move forward together and focus on what's best for our family, friends, nation, state and neighbors.
