Hugh "Chip" Dykes is a dedicated public servant who was served both his nation in time of war and his community in various leadership positions. He and his wife Zaida have raised 3 children and are longtime Oceanside residents.
Chip spent a career in the United States Marine Corps and was the recipient on numerous awards. He served in leadership positions in operations Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Desert Fox. His service to our country has taken him for the recruit Depot in South Carolina to the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait; from the operation base in Japan to the jungles of Kenya and the hills of Korea; from San Diego's own Camp Pendleton to providing relief in Somalia. His numerous awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/4stars), and the Kuwait Liberation Medal from both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
His involvement in the community is extensive. He is currently Chairman of the San Diego County Veteran's Advisory Council, nominated by County Supervisor Bill Horn and required confirmation by the entire Board of Supervisors. He is past President of the Tri City Council of the Navy League, past President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, past Chairman of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, and a Board Member of the Joe and Mary Mottino Family YMCA.
Even with his far-reaching public service, Chip knows the importance of the private sector in our economy. He has been a real estate agent and a loan officer, and has served as a vice president for new business development for both the business and non-profit sector, which required him to work with numerous small and large businesses throughout San Diego County.
Chip is running for the Oceanside City Council to continue his public service and to ensure his city and his community stay on the right track on economic, land use and business development issues.
