PERSONAL

Barbara Denny is happily married to Jay Doucet, MD, FACS. Barbara and Jay are pleased to own their home in Coronado with the best neighbors and friends for which they could hope. They are often seen together cycling and walking around our island and our beach. Barbara and Jay met in Coronado while taking flying lessons from the same instructor at the old Navy Flying Club on North Island while Jay was a NATO Exchange Officer at Naval Medical Center, Balboa Hospital, San Diego.

Retired to the reserves after twenty-two years of active duty military service in the RCAF, including three tours in surgical units in Afghanistan, two in the Balkans and one in Desert Storm, Dr. Doucet now works at UCSD Medical Center as a General & Trauma Surgeon with a subspecialty in Surgical Critical Care. Jay is also the Director of the UCSD Surgical Intensive Care Unit, a Professor of Surgery, a federal research grant recipient and a published author in peer review medical journals.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Aided by former State Senator Dede Alpert, as a private citizen Barbara led the successful effort to save the Coronado-San Diego Commuter Ferry Service from defunding by regional officials. Barbara also served by appointment on the Executive Board of the Coronado Transportation Management Association (CTMA) where she worked to increase transit service for all of Coronado, including our elderly, young and disabled residents. Currently Barbara serves on the Board of Directors of the South County Economic Development Council (SCEDC), where she is also a member of the SCEDC Transportation Committee. And Barbara represents the City of Coronado on the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Executive Board.

In addition to her focus on transportation and traffic reduction, Barbara is an attorney experienced in land use and water law. On the local government level, Barbara worked as the Land Use Intern for the San Diego City Councilmember representing San Diego District 1 which includes La Jolla, University City, Carmel Valley, Rancho Penasquitos, and more. There Barbara worked with residents, business owners, developers and others to balance interests and to protect property rights while getting things done in that district. On the state government level, Barbara wrote the litigation brief which successfully defended the San Diego Region Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit from lawsuit. The MS4 Permit is the foundation of Coronado's municipal water policy.

In addition to state and local government experience, Barbara's government service also includes the county and federal levels. Barbara worked as a Child Support Enforcement Attorney in the San Diego County District Attorney's Office where she helped children and families. In addition Barbara worked on staff in the San Diego office of United States Senator Dianne Feinstein, where she proudly served our military veterans and other constituents in California at the national level.

Before her experience in local, county, state and federal government, Barbara worked on the east coast in private practice as an attorney defending large corporations, hospitals and doctors from lawsuits in court.

Barbara is currently on hiatus from practicing law in order to devote herself full-time to serving the needs of Coronado as a member of our City Council. In addition to her many council responsibilities, Barbara enjoys hosting her popular SPEAK OUT CORONADO Town Hall Meetings in our Public Library on a monthly basis to listen to residents and discuss a wide variety of important topics. Past SPEAK OUT CORONADO Town Hall Meeting topics include, but are not limited to, city finances, traffic reduction, disaster preparedness, Neighborhood Watch and historic preservation.

Since she first ran for office several years ago, Barbara has worn out many yellow sun hats and pairs of shoes walking door-to-door on a weekly basis around our island. Barbara enjoys walking door-to-door because in this way she directly helps residents and local business owners while keeping her finger on the pulse of our island.

ELECTION HISTORY

Barbara was elected to the Coronado City Council in May 2009 to fill a council vacancy.

In June 2010 along with Admiral Bud Edney, and backed by the strong bipartisan grass roots group
dedicated to "Kiss the Tunnel Goodbye," Barbara defeated the Coronado Tunnel boondoggle when nearly 70% of Coronado voters voted "NO" on Proposition H.

In November 2010 Barbara was re-elected for a full term by a "Coronado landslide" of several hundred
votes. Barbara easily won eight of the nine voting districts on our island, and came in a very close second in the ninth voting district.

As a taxpayer advocate, historic preservationist and consensus builder, Barbara dedicated herself to
elected public service in order to protect against the waste of taxpayer dollars, to preserve our vanishing village atmosphere and to get things done in Coronado.
