Arthur Smith for Scotts Valley Fire Board

By Arthur Smith

Candidate for Director; Scotts Valley Fire Protection District

This information is provided by the candidate
An effective board member knows how to maintain balance. This can be challenging in lean financial times. During my tenure, almost 8 years, as a board member I helped negotiate employee contracts that are fair to both sides which included a new post retirement plan to provide employees with the means to pay for their own health care costs, thus relieving the District of that financial liability in future years. I have held positions on Board Committees, Finance for 6+ years, Personal for 3+ years and have been Board President twice. I presently serve on the Finance Committee where recent business has included ways to trim costs from the budget and preserve the best service to the public in the District. Since the Fire District relies on Property taxes for its revenue source, we will have some tough decisions to make if the revenue does not increase enough to cover increasing cost of living for service. I presently sit as an Alternate Commissioner for the Special District's position on Santa Cruz County LAFCO Board. I bring with me 34 years experience as a professional firefighter and 25 years of budgeting and financial experience as a current Finance Director that has a budget of 5.4 million dollars. Experience with these two provides me with the Business and Fire knowledge needed to be a Board Director. Community Service includes Cub Scout s and Boy Scouts in Scotts Valley where I served as Webelos Leader in Cub Scout Pack 604, Scout Master in Boy Scout Troop 604 as well as other committee assignments. Belonged to Lions Club of Scotts Valley for many years, highest office position was club treasurer. I have volunteered in many community service events since our move to Scotts Valley. Presently I hold a volunteer CEO position on a Sacramento based Non-Profit Firefighters Benevolent Foundation that supports firefighters and families throughout the State. My family and I have had the pleasure of being residents of Scotts Valley and the District for 26 years. We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and welcoming place and endeavor to participate in local events whenever I can. I ask you for your vote. If re-elected I will do my best to continue to be your servant as a board member so the Scotts Valley Fire District will continue to provide the highest level of service we can provide.
