Smart Voter Official Statement for Steven E. Nelson

Candidate for
Board Member; Mountain View-Whisman School District

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

Occupation: teacher/retired engineer
Education and Qualifications:
I'm a retired engineer who returned to teaching ten years ago. My first students were in Africa, in the mid 1970s, through the Peace Corps. For the last 6 years I've been 'retiring' by working as a substitute elementary and middle school teacher, with experience in all District schools.

In engineering I supported world-class research & development at places like Xerox PARC, GE Medical, and several UC campuses. Over the last several years I have supported the county science fair as a Director.

Issues: First - formal community involvement to the standards of our City! Open District meetings always to the standards of the Brown Act. Support for teachers and class-size reduction as promised. Permanently change the Shoreline law to protect education revenues. Trustee subcommittees on Compensation and Facilities. "360 degree" job reviews of administrators and teachers. Dual Language program into middle school: aim for UC foreign language requirement.

I know this District at the classroom level. I have significant experience in the formal governance of non-profits and always have the ethics and stamina to act as a "whistleblower". I would use legal advice from the independent County Consul rather than the District Office. NelsonOnSchools@gmail.com
