Elk Grove Unified School District, Area 1, Trustee

By Tony Perez

Candidate for Board Member; Elk Grove Unified School District; Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
I am a product of my mother's hard work, native Californian who worked in the canneries for over 40 years, to provide for 3 children. My mother made it possible for me to be the first to graduate from college. I have a Bachelors of Arts from San Francisco State, Masters of Science in Education and K-12 Teachers Credential from University of Southern California.

I have two children. One has special needs. I successfully advocated for full inclusion for his special needs. They both graduated from Florin High School. As a long-time classroom volunteer, PTA member, Special Education Site Council member, District Special Education Council member, booster club member as well as a K-12 teacher, I've experienced education inside and out.

I am running because I care about our youth. I want to be that voice for them and you, the concern citizen.

If elected my priorities will be to address the issues that we care most:
1. Keeping our kids safe.
2. Protecting after school programs.
3. Reducing dropout rates.
4. And putting more resources in the classroom.

I know the power of education to change people's lives. I lived it, my kids lived it, and I want every child to have the best education possible.

I was also a civil servant in the Department of Health Care Services and Department of Public Health for 20 years serving women, children and community clinics. I provided consultation to safely net clinic providers in Primary Care and Family Health Unit, set-up primary care programs statewide to IRCA Program for new citizen, Prop. 99 statewide smoking cessation programs and disaster relief services for major catastrophes in California.

As a board member the Florin Resource Conservation District, I have balanced the budget for 12 years.

My extensive experience as a teacher and my strong commitment to public education will help me to succeed on the school board. I will collaborate with teachers, school employees, and parents to tackle the complex problems facing our school district. I will bring people together, not pull them apart. I know that we need cooperation, not conflict, to meet the challenges ahead.

I have given back to the community with the following activities: John F. Kennedy High Drop-Out Prevention Program-SCUSD, VFW POST 67-Veterans Social Services and Fundraising, SEIU 1000 DLC President, Vice-President, Job-Stewart, United Way Campaign for State Employees, March of Dimes for State Employee Campaign, and coached baseball, basketball and soccer teams.
