Technical Academies are Needed in Todays High schools!

By John Graham

Candidate for Trustee; Hemet Unified School District; Trustee Area 3

This information is provided by the candidate
Today's High Schools Force feed all students classes preparing them for entry into four-year colleges leaving many of our high school students disinterested in High School. Classes preparing students for college entrance are great for students that are interested in going to college, but more than half never go to college. We need Technical Academies to keep students interested in graduating from high school and having the skills after graduation to enter current and future job markets.
High Schools today need to be comprehensive high schools dedicated to preparing students to be productive citizens in the 21st century. Schools should consist not only of traditional programs, but also contain a blend of Technical Academies, designed to provide non college bound students with marketable skills whether they are in in the areas of cosmetology, drafting, welding, nursing, horticulture, masonry, air conditioning, solar power, culinary arts, or one or more of many other.

There are well paying jobs available after graduations that do not require college educations. Technical Academies can and do answer that need and keep our students who are not interested in college, and or know they are never going to college not only a career after graduation, but a place as a contributing member of our communities.

The added benefit is that Technical Academies leave students with the same skills in academic areas that are required for graduation from high school. This allows the students the flexibility of changing their minds and going on to further technical education, community colleges, or college after high school. We all know that once students becomes successful there is no stopping them from reaching for the stars until they find what they truly love.
