Position on Council Stipend

By Jose M. Santibanez

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Greenfield

This information is provided by the candidate
I will propose that the council voluntarily give up their stipend during difficult economic times
Recently, considerable cut-backs in resources for small towns have risen to accommodate the increasing economic distress that the state of California is facing. In this time of financial difficulty, it is apparent to me that our city's elected officials must take whatever possible action necessary to recover from this and contribute to our city's loses. If I am elected to The Greenfield City Council, I will voluntarily take a cut in my stipend and would challenge all other council members and the Mayor to take the same cut across the board. Cutting our stipend by 50% would save the city $11,550.00 annually. Forfeiting the stipend altogether would save the city $23,100.00 annually.

In recent conversations with Greenfield residents, I see a concern for the lack of youth activities and recreational resources provided in our city. I would like to use the income that the city would save from council stipends to be placed into a fund for youth and recreational purposes. I would also like to challenge our local agricultural industries and businesses to make financial contributions to this very important community need. If we all work together, we can help our youth prosper.
