|
Margaret is a proud native of Salinas. The daughter of Migrant parents, she believes in giving back to her community. Margaret has tackled difficult issues on behalf of education ( Former SUHSD Trustee) and the community at large. As Mayor Margaret will apply that same passion, energy and determination. Her ability to bring diverse groups together for a common good is essential to making Salinas a prosperous city. Community Advocacy/Leader Margaret has been an active Advocate for the Community. While others talk, Margaret has gotten the job done. In "2008" Margaret brought together neighbors, business owners, teachers and veterans to STOP the Department of Corrections plans to build an 11 million dollar annual tax burdening State Prison in Salinas. Recently, Margaret worked with business owners, local residents, growers ,and labor to defeat the Solid Waste Authority's plan to build an experimental garbage burning facility in Gonzales. Our air quality is among the cleanest in the nation, lets keep it that way. Margaret spoke out against SVMH's mismanagement of public funds and former CEO: Sam Downing's 4 million dollar cash retirement payout. Margaret called on the Board to STOP the culture of corruption at SVMH by reducing over inflated administrative salaries, reduce consultants and eliminate wasteful spending. She successfully rallied against their attempts to sell our SVMH to a private conglomerate healthcare network and advocated for a stand alone hospital, with local community control. This is our city, let's take it back from the special interests and Good Ole' Boys whose stranglehold keeps us from moving forward.
