Fernando Armenta was born and raised in the City of Salinas. Fernando attended local schools and attended Hartnell College. He graduated from San Diego State University in 1976 where he received his Bachelors Degree in Social Welfare. He worked locally for a non-profit before going back to school. In 1979 he received his Masters Degree in Social Work from San Jose State University and began working for the County of Monterey. He worked for Child Protective Services dealing with families in crisis and developing plans in assisting children and families.

In 1987 Mr. Armenta became the Medical Social Work Manager at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, California.

Fernando and his wife Noemi reside in East Salinas. They have one son and two grandsons. His son is a Veteran and served in Iraq.

Fernando served on the Salinas City Council from 1991 till 2000. He served as Mayor Pro-Tem from 1997 until his departure from office in November of 2000 to become our County Supervisor and has been your District 1 County Supervisor since January 9, 2001.

Fernando has been recognized for his community and public service on numerous occasions. Fernando has been a pioneer and leader addressing numerous community civil rights issues, affordable housing and social service needs.

He was a community organizer for the United Farm Workers in 1976, and he has been involved in grassroots organizing since and has been a public servant in one form or another as a volunteer or as an elected official. He was instrumental in introducing the idea of building a Vietnam Memorial and Veterans Park in the City of Salinas, as well as naming César Chávez Elementary School, Library and Park in Salinas, California.

Fernando served in the U.S. Army from 1968 till 1972. He served in two overseas military tours; one was in Okinawa, Japan for approximately one year and the second was in South Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. Supervisor Armenta received an honorable discharge on January 18, 1972-at the rank of Sergeant E-5.

Fernando is a native of Salinas that understands that we must support our local businesses and that they in turn must support our local community. He understands that together our community will foster!
