Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Shari Simon

Candidate for
Board Member; Moraga School District

This information is provided by the candidate

If given the opportunity to serve on the Board, these are my goals:

1. Keep our schools strong. We have a high-performing and sought after-school district. My family, like many others, moved to Moraga in large part for the schools. High quality schools are essential not only to Moraga families with school-age children, but also to Moragans whose children graduated long ago. Maintaining this excellence will require that we continue to improve and to innovate to meet the academic challenges of the 21st century. We need to achieve this goal in a time of significant economic hurdles, primarily state educational funding cuts. Our challenge is to meet the goal of keeping our schools strong by making the best of increasingly scarce resources.

We can do this by:

  • Engaging in effective strategic, contingency, and multi-year planning.
  • Identifying programs and initiatives that have a significant measurable positive impact on our educational goals and prioritizing them for investment.
  • Measuring in an objective, critical, and accountable fashion the success of those programs and initiatives.
  • Wisely and strategically investing in technology and teacher development.

2. Enrich our children's school experience. Our students enjoy a secure and dynamic environment in which to learn and thrive. Students need to feel that their schools offer a safe place in which to participate in academic activities and to follow their intellectual curiosity. At the same time, we need to attend to core areas of the curriculum, while providing a well-rounded education to each and every Moraga student.

We can do this by:

  • Implementing recommendations made by the District's Student Safety Committee.
  • Ensuring that student safety remains a priority in future decision- and policy-making, and with curriculum selection and teacher and staff training.
  • Investing in enhancements to teacher training and student curriculum that engages our students and improves learning.
  • Meeting the 2015 State mandate to adopt the Common Core Standards.
  • Integrating must-have 21st Century Learning skills into the curriculum.

3. Promote community involvement. Effective and successful school districts are in close alignment with the communities that they serve. Members of our community offer deep and diverse experiences, skills and accomplishments and share a commitment to maintaining the excellence of our schools. We should be sure to tap into our community's resources and collective energy as we set and implement our District's strategic plans, priorities, and programs.

We can do this by:

  • Actively engaging in a participatory dialogue with the community.
  • Understanding our community's expectations and aspirations.
  • Regularly communicating to the community our District's goals and objectives.
  • Building on our relationship with St. Mary's College -- one of Moraga's strongest assets -- and formalizing an educational partnership.

I believe that by achieving these goals, we will continue to provide Moraga students with a rewarding and enriching school experience. At the same time, we will maintain our position as a top-performing school district, continue to attract young families to Moraga, and preserve the investment of Moragans whose children are alums of our schools.
