New Parks

By Lee Mason

Candidate for Director; Ambrose Recreation and Park District

Ambrose takes ownership of 5 county parks
This summer Contra Costa County turned over 5 county parks to Ambrose Recreation and Park District as part of a settlement agreement. Those parks are Lynbrook, Hickory Meadows, ViewPoint, Tradewinds and Boeger Park. They also received about $470,000 that the county had designated for maintenance and improvements of those parks, they gave that $470,000 to city of Pittsburg for the Ambrose pool project since Ambrose Park is now in the city of Pittsburg.

That leaves them $51,428 per year to maintain those 5 parks. They contracted out the landscaping at a cost of $42,199 which leaves them $9,029 to pay for water, electricity and all other repairs, maintenance and improvements for 5 parks.

When the General Manager was questioned about it before accepting this settlement agreement he readily agreed he did not know how much it would cost to maintain these parks but he knew it was more than they would receive from the county. When the board was cautioned by members of the public to wait until they had a better idea of the burden they were undertaking they responded with these comments, "were darned if we do and darned if we don't, so we might as well go ahead" and "oh well, its a chance we have to take, maybe we can get money from a grant or something".

I don't know about you but this is not the kind of fiscal responsibility I am looking for in someone charged with spending public funds.
