Common sense budgeting

By Barry Grove

Candidate for Council Member; City of Walnut Creek

The choice to between core services and higher taxes is not the only way
We are in difficult economic times, but they won't last. Now more than ever we need to prioritze core services and infrastructure projects. We can do this by looking at many of the spending items that were fine in the good times, but are perhaps unnecessary in times when the economy is in a slump. Many politicians will emphasize that the only way out is to raise taxes. They are, by offering this hobson's choice, refusing to look at wasteful spending. Further, they are not looking at different means, such as public/private partnerships, to bring revenue which will enable us to enjoy the things that have and continue to make our city beautiful.
