Smart Voter Official Statement for Deb McCabe

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Durham Unified School District

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

Name: Deb McCabe
Office: Governing Board Member, Durham Unified School District

I am running for the governing board of the Durham Unified School District because I value public service. I grew up in Chico, and returned to the area with my husband to raise our children in a small-town" environment. We settled in Durham in part based on the excellent reputation of its schools. Since then, I have been actively involved in my children's classrooms and school events, while also co-leading a local Girl Scout troop.

My professional background is well-suited to the office of board member. For most of my career I have worked as a college instructor. I currently teach part-time at California State University, Chico. My courses focus on effective written and oral communication, small group decision-making, and ethics. In addition to teaching, I worked for several years as an attorney. This law background should enable me to interpret and apply the rules and regulations under which the DUSD must operate, as well as to manage the conflicts that can arise when there are not enough resources to go around.

If elected, I hope to draw on this background to help steer the DUSD through challenging financial times. Thank you for your vote.
