I grew-up in dairy farm country in Upstate New York, and was wandering the territory from a very young age, experimenting with streambeds, hunting and fishing on my own and with my family. These meanderings shaped my life fom this early stage with a love for our world and an interest in how it works, and why. An honor student in High School, I went to Michigan State University, where I enrolled in the Resources Development in the School of Agriculture. This was a kind of a free-wheeling and open Department which allowed one to shape his own curriculum. After graduation I went to South Carolina to work in the Trout Hatchery at Walhalla. Then began a migration that led from South Carolina, then to southern California, where I began to wotk with the California Dept. of Fish and Game. Continuing in late 1969 when I left Blythe, and the lower Colorado River, I journeyed north-west-ward to become the Department's first District Fishery Biologist in the Feather River District (Butte and Plumas Counties). I chose to live in Oroville, over all other towns in the District because of its advantagous and beautiful location. Over the years I have attended, and spoken at, many meetings and forums large and small, and have acquired a sense of what makes them succeed or fail. I don't believe in specific promises. There are always going to be new and unforeseen events or circumstances that force a redirect of resources. Flexibility and nimbleness are key to success. Individuals count and should be respected for what they do or offer. |
