I want to promote our local, independent businesses not only to protect the unique character of our city, but also because a community-based economy is more sustainable economically and environmentally.I want to promote our local, independent businesses not only to protect the unique character of our city, but also because a community-based economy is more sustainable economically and environmentally. Studies show that locally-based businesses retain 45% of money in our local economy, while big-box stores only retain 15%. Locally based businesses have less environmental impacts than out-of-state companies. They also have more investment and commitment to our community. There are many ways that we can support and promote our local businesses in Albany. Areas on Solano Avenue need better lighting. We could offer incentives to new start-ups. Many of the merchants are concerned about the balance of retail stores vs. service-based businesses. I will propose an ordinance to maintain a reasonable balance between retail and service. There are many ways we could liven up our commercial districts. We could have more city-wide events similar to Dinner With Albany. We could close Solano Avenue to cars for one Sunday per month during the summer. We could have smaller sidewalk events featuring live music ensembles. Another way we could support our local businesses/economy is to create a local currency. Other nearby communities are already doing it, including Bernal Heights in San Francisco, and Fairfax and Point Reyes in Marin County. Using a local currency ensures that 100% of our revenue stays in our local economy. This could be in the form of coins, paper money or a debit card that can only be used in Albany. |
