BIOGRAPHY

Alice Adrienne Spearman was born in Berkeley, California and soon moved with her parents to Oakland where she has remained and served her community. She spent her school life in Oakland attending Lockwood Elementary School, Woodland Elementary School, Frick junior High School and graduating from Castlemont Senior High School. She attended California University Eastbay and California University at San Jose. Ms. Spearman is a widowed mother of two adult daughters, both who graduated from Castlemont Senior High, grandmother of two young ladies, both attending Castlemont and one grandson age 3. She is a member of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church where Dr. Harold Mayberry is the pastor.

Ms. Spearman is an advocate for the education for children and adults. Her mother, Mary Sue Thomas was a consummate educator and many of her mentors are educators. After her mother passed away, she became an active participant in her children's education. This was the beginning of an era towards education, contrary to her educational pursuits early on. Now her priority is to assist parents in helping their children and learn how to navigate within the educational institutions in order to ensure they receive the best education.

In addition, Ms. Spearman has volunteered at many schools beginning at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School proceeding to Frick Middle School and Castlemont Senior High School. She worked as a Parent Liaison for Project SOAR serving Frick Middle School, McClymonds High School and Oakland High School; past chair of the District Advisory Council, Oakland Unified School District, 12 years, Chair of the National Coalition of Title I Chapter I Parents, Region 9, 4 years, a Board Member of the Community Action Agency, City of Oakland, appointed by Councilmember Henry Chang representing the entire city. Ms. Spearman has given several presentations to many local, statewide and national organizations. She served as a television talk show hostess on SOUL BEAT International Television Network featuring topics on education.

Ms. Spearman is a member of several organizations including, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The National Alliance of Black School Educators, The African American Advisory Committee on Crime, the Task Force on the Education of African American Children for Oakland Unified School District and the Oakland Chapter of the NAACP.

Ms. Spearman represents District 7 since 2005, re-elected for a second term on June 8, 2008. She was elected by her colleagues Vice President of the Board for 3 years and elected as President of the Board of Education by her colleagues in 2009.
