As a college student I organized and led campaigns on issues of educational equality. I have also been a community organizer in Oakland over the past decade, working with young people placed at-risk, mentoring them and teaching them about local and global politics. As someone who has experienced the challenges of growing up in Oakland but also the power that Oakland residents have to make change, I have the insight, qualities, and understanding required for a leader to establish a new mode of governance in these times of economic crisis. Crime, violence, unemployment, and housing have affected us negatively for decades, wherein our communities have made minimal progress, socially and economically. Status quo leadership has left some Oakland residents living like second-class citizens; now, today, with a combination of education and life-experiences of being raised in this city, I will prioritize and emphasize a budget reform that will produce stability to our community colleges, minimize wasteful spending, and minimize the outsourcing of jobs + instead put an emphasis on employing our most marginalized populations.
