About Dan Kalb Dan Kalb has spent his entire adult life as a policy analyst, environmental and public interest advocate, policy director, progressive reformer, and community service volunteer. He's experienced in the legislative process, and knows how to analyze problems, vet solutions and get things done. For the past nine years, Dan was the full-time California Policy Director at the Union of Concerned Scientists. Dan led the coalition that passed landmark legislation requiring at least one-third of California's electricity to come from clean, renewable sources by the end of this decade. Dan also worked extensively on environmental health and transportation issues throughout the state and Bay Area. He's experienced in building effective coalitions and working with a broad range of people and organizations to further vital policy goals. As Chapter Director of the Sierra Club, he worked to protect open spaces, fought for environmental health and justice, and helped stop an unnecessary expansion of airport runways into San Francisco Bay, which would have increased air pollution and harmed our precious Bay waters and ecosystem. Dan has been at the forefront of the fight to reform our campaign finance laws and keep big-moneyed special interests from overwhelming our political system as a staff member at California Common Cause. He is a strong supporter of 'clean money' elections, and has worked on consumer protection issues as well. Dan is also a board member and past VP of the Metropolitan Greater Oakland (MGO) Democratic Club. Dan is on the East Bay Jewish Community Relations Council board of directors and a past president of the Raoul Wallenberg Jewish Democratic Club. Dan co-led the Isaiah Project, which brought together the African American and Jewish communities to improve social justice and enhance cultural understanding. He successfully lobbied for the creation of the Oil Independence Oakland Task Force to develop an action plan to help make Oakland oil independent by 2020. Kalb currently serves on the Youth Leadership and Community Safety Strategic Planning Task Force for the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth (OFCY). Dan was also an assistant director at a local community college campus. We need someone with the experience, determination and smart ideas to make Oakland an even greater city. As a Council Member, Dan will:
