Quality of Life Issues
- Quality Schools
City Council and the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) meet every quarter to provide update on our respective agencies and to discuss items that are of concern and/or mutual interest. This provides us with opportunities to have thoughtful discussion on how we can mutually benefit each other.
I have worked with FUSD, particularly with Superintendent Jim Morris, in partnership on a number of items for which I am very proud:
- Safe Routes to School + prior to my appointment to the Alameda County Transportation Commission, there was not a single Fremont School enrolled in this program. I fought for geographic equity and brought the program to Fremont. I am happy to report that we have a thriving program with 10 schools currently enrolled and many more to sign up. This program will result in cleaner air, reduced congestions, safer streets, and healthier students and adults.
- Introduced and promoted Comcast "Internet Essential" Programs for FUSD. This program provides for low cost internet access and computer systems to low income families in the FUSD system.
- Raising awareness of Racial Discrimination + in June, I hosted a forum to discuss the documentary"Vincent, Who?" in conjunction with FUSD. This discussion was part of a national Google+ Hangout that had over 30 cities participating nationwide. This first ever Google+ Hangout brought leadership from all over the Country to discuss the history of racial discrimination with a focus on Asian Pacific Islanders.
- I hosted a private screening of the movie, "BULLY" in August, again in collaboration with FUSD. Bullying has reached epidemic proportions and there is heighten awareness of how pervasive this issue is. I secured financial sponsors to offset the costs of the movie to purchase 280 tickets for students from all 42 schools as well as a number of private schools to view the movie. The screening of the movie was the kick-off event for the District's year-long Anti-Bullying Campaign.
- There will be other upcoming projects that I will initiate with the School District in an effort to assist our excellent school district. This has been a top priority for me as a Councilmember.
Maintaining and improving streets and roads
- As a member of the Steering Committee for the Alameda County Transportation Commission to develop Measure B1, I ensured that Fremont will get our fair share of revenues so that we can have funding for the Irvington BART station, street and pothole repairs, paratransit for our seniors, bus, bicycle and pedestrian programs.
Parks and Recreation are important to the healthy well being of our citizens, during my time on Council there are a number of projects:
- Niles Town Plaza
- Aqua Adventures Water Park
- Sabercat Trails
- Kristi Yamaguchi Play Park
- Repairs and updates of park playground equipment
- Farmer Markets
- Extensive Park and Recreations programs for seniors, children, & adults
- Upcoming Skate Park
- Upcoming Sports complex in the South part of Fremont
- Upcoming civic plaza and pocket parks in the Downtown
